20 years old and from Gambia.
To reach Italy he crossed six countries: The Gambia, Senegal, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, and the most dangerous of all, Libya.
His journey took about three months. He was 17 years old when he crossed the Mediterranean Sea and landed in Catania, Sicily on 25 June 2015. He was transferred directly to Naples to the state housing where he still resides.
I met him at Napoli Centrale, Naples’ main railway station, where I was scheduled to reunite with David (20, Gambia; reunion story forthcoming), who he had accompanied for the visit.
He issued his hellos and greetings with a swiftness that made friendship immediate. He was the youngest of the group, but having been in Italy for more than two full years he was also the most advanced speaker. His verbal cues directed the conversation, and the group’s dynamic sparkled because of it.
MotM plans to record his full journey story upon our next meeting in Napoli in 2018.
Jamilu is an amazing human being.
