Migrants of the Mediterranean – Privacy Notice 

Data controller
Your personal data is collected and processed by Pamela Kerpius in the context of the project "Migrants of the Mediterranean" in its capacity as data controller ("Data Controller"), domiciled at 17884 W. Briarwood Drive, Goodyear, AZ 85338, USA.
Migrants of the Mediterranean, project founded by Pamela Kerpius, uses Humanitarian Storytelling as its means to present the experience of the individual migrant’s journey, from their country of origin to Europe.

Personal data collected
The Data Controller will process your personal data collected during the one-on-one interview concerning your journey story to Europe ("Interview"). 
In particular, the Data Controller will collect and process any personal data provided by you when you fill out the Release Form for Interviewees and respond to questions, including, subject to your consent, through the use of your images (photos/videos).
If you make any donation, Migrants of the Mediterranean will also process your personal data provided through the dedicated website. This data may include your name, surname, date of birth, email address, postal address, phone number and any other additional information you choose to provide. 

Purposes of the processing and legal basis
Your personal data will be processed on the basis of your consent, if provided, in relation to each specific purpose. In particular, your personal data will be processed for the purpose of communicating and disclosing images and video-recordings of your Interview and/or publishing images and video-recordings or any other relevant content and material, on the Migrants of the Mediterranean website and media channels.
In case you make any donation to the "Migrants of the Mediterranean" project, we may also process your personal data on the basis of our legitimate interests. 

Categories of recipients of your personal data
The Data Controller may communicate your personal data to any of the following categories of recipients, which may act as data processors:

  • our data processors or persons in charge of the processing;

  • third party press agencies or any other party that provides professional services to us or that is involved in the organization of the Interview or in the set-up of the Migrants of the Mediterranean website and media channels;

  • public authorities and enforcement bodies when it is required to do so by the applicable law.
    It is also possible that some of your personal data will be processed by third parties (such as a newspaper) after taking connection directly with you because of your story published by the Data Controller. Please note that in this case they will act as autonomous data controllers. 

Data transfers
When transfers of your personal data are made to countries outside the European Economic Area, these transfers are made in compliance with the applicable legal and regulatory provisions in order to guarantee an adequate level of protection (e.g. Privacy Shield, Standard Contractual Clauses, etc.).  

Retention period of your personal data
Your personal data will be stored as long as it is necessary for the operations for which they were collected (e.g. if you do agree to your images being published, such images will be cancelled as soon as your story has been finalized). In any case, your personal data will be processed as long as we have your consent. 

Cookies 
When you visit the Migrants of the Mediterranean website, a web server sends a cookie or other similar technology to your device. Cookies are small pieces of information sent by a web server to a web browser, which allows the server to uniquely identify the browser on each page. The website of Migrants of the Mediterranean only uses first-party or third-party analytical cookies that do not allow the identification of the user. In particular, this website uses first party technical cookies that allow you to browse through the website and benefit of session options (e.g. they allow to indicate hyperlink that you have already clicked with a different color). This website also uses Google Analytics cookies to help Migrants of the Mediterranean understand how visitors arrive at this website, browse or use it. Google Analytics settings have been set as to collect anonymously information on how people use the website, without any identification process in place. Data stored by these cookies never shows personal details from which your individual identity can be established. However, if you wish to prevent Google to collect your data click here.

Your rights 
You are granted at any time with the right of access, rectification, erasure, portability, restriction or objection by sending an email to the Data Controller at info@migrantsofthemed.com or pamela@migrantsofthemed.com. In case of contact, please insert a reference to your story. 
With regard to your rights, we inform you that:
a)   the right to access derives from your right to obtain confirmation as to whether or not your personal data are processed by the Data Controller;
b)   the right to rectification allows you to obtain without undue delay the rectification of your personal data which are inaccurate, as well as the right to have incomplete personal data completed;
c)   the right to erasure allows you to ask for the deletion of your personal data, when a ground for such a request applies, such as, by merely way of example when the data are no longer necessary for the purposes for which they were collected;
d)   the right to data portability, where applicable, allows you to receive your personal data provided to the Data Controller in a structured, commonly used and machine-readable format;
e)   the right to restriction of processing allows you to request a limitation to the use of your personal data, where applicable;
f)    the right to object allows you to object to processing of your personal data under certain conditions. In this context, you have the right to object at any time, on grounds relating to your particular situation, to any processing of your personal data that is based on Data Controller's legitimate interests. In this case the Data Controller shall no longer process your personal data unless it can demonstrate compelling legitimate grounds for the processing which override your interests, rights and freedoms or for the Data Controller's establishment, exercise or defense of legal claims.
In addition to the above, you have at any time the right to withdraw from your consent for processing without affecting the lawfulness of processing of data by the Data Controller that are based on consent before your withdrawal. You also have the right to lodge a complaint before any EU data protection authority, which for Italy is the Garante per la protezione dei dati personali.
